If you’ve ever loved a dog, you’ll know they’re never just a pet.
They’re the keeper of your secrets, your shadow, your reason to get outside on the bleakest days — and your built-in comedian when you least expect it.
That’s why my Dog Character Paintings don’t sit in the realm of traditional pet portraits.
I’m not here to copy a photograph.
I’m here to bottle the essence of your best mate and paint the personality that makes them unforgettable.
Expressive dog portrait showing unique character and humour in fine art style by Sue Dewhurst
A classic pet portrait often focuses on likeness alone — the shape of the ears, the tilt of the head, the fur. All lovely, but not the full story.
A Character Painting digs deeper.
It asks questions. It notices quirks. It listens to stories. It captures:
The way they sit like a grumpy pensioner demanding a cuppa
The zoomies that erupt out of nowhere
The soulful look that says, “Yes, I heard the cheese wrapper… now pay the cheese tax”
The quiet loyalty that gets you through the worst days
These are the moments that make a dog the dog.
And that’s what I paint.
Before I pick up a brush, I learn about your dog like I’m being introduced to a new friend. You tell me:
Their funniest habits
Their nicknames
Their favourite walking spots
Their story highlights, daft escapades or heart-melting routines
That’s when the painting begins to form — a blend of truth, humour and heart.
After painting Molly, a client said:
“It’s not a pet portrait… it’s her personality right there. Mind blown.”
That’s the highest compliment my work can receive.
Because it becomes an heirloom
A one-off fine art painting that honours the bond between you and your dog becomes something you keep for a lifetime — and pass on.
Because it celebrates their quirks
Your dog is one-of-a-kind. Your artwork should be too.
Because it’s a conversation starter
Visitors always ask.
And you always have a story.
Because when they’re gone, the painting brings them back
Many of my clients commission a piece in memory of their dog. A character painting can feel like having them gently back in the room.
My commissions range from £240 to £1,800, depending on size and detail, and each one is painted with the care your dog deserves. Payment plans are available.
You’ll receive:
A consultation to explore your dog’s character (in person if you live near)
Guidance on the perfect reference photos
A bespoke fine art painting in archival materials
A story-led artwork that truly captures your dog’s spirit
Slots are limited each month as every painting takes time, love and attention.
I don’t mass-produce art.
I don’t churn out look-alike portraits.
I paint dogs as if I know them, and by the time your artwork is finished, I usually do.
That’s why people come to me when they want something extraordinary — something personal, heartfelt, humorous, tender and true.

My studio is open by appointment, offering a relaxed chance to see the work up close, talk through ideas, and spend time with the paintings in the space they’re made. Visitors are welcome to browse finished pieces, view works in progress, and ask questions — no pressure, no white gloves, just an honest look at the process behind the work. If you’re considering a particular painting or commission, a studio visit allows time to connect with the story, the colour, the humour and the detail that doesn’t always come through on a screen. Expect conversation, a cuppa, might stretch to a custard cream and a bit of a gossip but always a very warm welcome.
Studio visits are designed to feel comfortable and welcoming — especially if you’ve never visited an artist’s studio before.
