Rural and Coastal Life

Categories

A curated selection of Sue Dewhurst’s most recent pieces.

This collection grew out of my lifelong fascination with the quiet theatre of rural and coastal Britain the places where work is hard, weather is unforgiving, and humour is often the strongest currency. These paintings are not nostalgic postcards or softened visions of country life. They are observations. Real moments. Mud on boots, salt in the air, faces shaped by years of labour and lived experience.

The characters I paint are farmers, fishermen, smallholders and coastal dwellers people whose lives are dictated by seasons, tides and routine. There is resilience here, but also weariness. Pride sits alongside struggle. A wry smile might cut through a long day, but nothing is glossed over. My aim is to honour the grit as much as the warmth, capturing lives that are often romanticised but rarely truly seen.

Each painting carries its own quiet narrative. A pause in the fields. A figure braced against the wind. A moment of reflection after work is done. I am drawn to these in-between moments, where endurance, tradition, and humanity reveal themselves without performance or sentimentality.

This body of work is about connection to place and purpose. About lives lived close to the elements. About people who simply get on with it. I am always moved by how strongly viewers respond to these pieces, often recognising a relative, a memory, or a part of their own story within them. That sense of recognition is what makes these works deeply personal and, increasingly, collectable.

Studio Visits

My studio is open by appointment, offering a relaxed chance to see the work up close, talk through ideas, and spend time with the paintings in the space they’re made. Visitors are welcome to browse finished pieces, view works in progress, and ask questions — no pressure, no white gloves, just an honest look at the process behind the work. If you’re considering a particular painting or commission, a studio visit allows time to connect with the story, the colour, the humour and the detail that doesn’t always come through on a screen. Expect conversation, a cuppa, might stretch to a custard cream and a bit of a gossip but always a very warm welcome.

Studio visits are designed to feel comfortable and welcoming — especially if you’ve never visited an artist’s studio before.
